Ikki II - Imogen Morris
Artist, Imogen says
“I am influenced by the traditional craft of hand-embroidery but my style puts a contemporary spin on thread as an art material. My practice challenges the boundaries between craft and fine art.
I see thread as my pencil or paintbrush; exploring the versatility of thread, in ways that means it intrudes into other mediums. I push, pull and stretch the line of thread to draw. I build up layers in colour to create form, light, and shadow. I morph thread into tangible, 3D forms to push the work into the sculptural realm.”
This piece is just explosive! Imogen’s aim was to create a bold work, that reflects the confident and dynamic personality of the subject. Splashes of colour, broad brushstrokes, splatters of paint all capture a vibrancy and energy that represents the subject’s character. The subject appears defiant but graceful with a self-assured and assertive posture.
Imogen has started new experiments to create a ‘relief’ in the work – holes cut out and replaced with more layers of paint and thread. She has included abstract elements and played with composition of lines and colour combinations.
Within these reliefs made, are 4 different coloured threads (peach, pink and two tones of green.) Imogen wanted these ‘holes’ or ‘reliefs’ to disrupt the portrait without taking away from it. The work dances between the realms of being two-dimensional and three dimensional
