Ikki II - Imogen Morris
Imogen is a Birmingham-based artist known for her innovative portraits crafted from nail and thread. Drawing inspiration from traditional hand-embroidery, she subverts the common perception of thread as merely a craft medium, positioning it within the fine art realm. By using thread as her pencil or paintbrush, Imogen intricately explores its versatility, manipulating it into three-dimensional forms that evoke light, shadow, and emotion. Through her technique of wrapping thread around nails, she constructs mesh-like representations of her subjects, primarily depicting women as bold and confident figures.
Her work combines thread with vibrant paint using acrylics, emulsion, and spray paint, creating dynamic backgrounds that contrast with the meticulous thread details. The juxtaposition of the delicate yet strong qualities of the thread against the angular forms in her subjects' faces results in compelling visual narratives. By layering triangles of thread, Imogen captures the essence and personality of her subjects, making each piece a unique exploration of identity and expression.
