Disoglia - Bill Sankey
Bill, is a creative who sees his work, and perhaps more fundamentally, himself, as a product of the postmodern jungle.
He says the “ I am engaged in trying to reconcile a range of competing artefacts into a coherent visual language, perhaps to make sense of the confusion within and around me. To that end my principal method is collage; combining and contrasting different elements together, whether this is by using paint and paper or computer-based graphics.”
His current working methods grew out of re-purposing several large-scale paintings that had been abandoned, out of sheer frustration. Bill cut and rip the large paper works into new shapes and then juxtaposed materials from different paintings into abstract collages to create some unexpected relationships that were more interesting than their original sources. Organically, he began to employ similar methods digitally.
When it comes to Bills digital work, he begins by drawing vector shapes in Adobe Illustrator. He tells us “I used to work as a graphic designer and part of my role was designing logos, pictograms and typography. The shapes I draw I describe as “glyphs”, and they are informed by the digital and commercial environments. The visual influences of these glyphs are quite varied, taken from corporate branding, wayfinding and infographics, ancient alphabets, graffiti and street art.
In addition to these tight formations, I like to explore looser iconography that is meant to mimic the fluid qualities of mark-making found in painterly abstract art. If these two separate languages mark the opposite ends of a spectrum, then my work is an exploration of the shapes that lie along its wavelength.”
